How it works in practice
A backdrop gives the eye somewhere to land and the camera something to frame. At a ceremony it sits behind the couple or the officiant. At a gala it may be a branded step-and-repeat at arrivals and a stage backdrop for speeches and acts. Every photo of a speaker, a performer or a couple will have it in the background, which is why a dollar spent here usually goes further than one spent on table décor.
Common builds include floral walls, fabric and pipe and drape, printed vinyl on a frame, greenery walls, timber arches and LED walls for corporate stages. Size it to the photo: a backdrop around 3 m wide by 2.4 m high frames a group of four to six; a stage backdrop should be at least as wide as the stage.
How to handle it

- Decide the photo you want, then size the backdrop to fit it.
- Check ceiling height and where it can be anchored. Freestanding builds need weighted bases.
- Ask the venue about fabrics and decor near lights; flame-retardant fabric is often required.
- Light it. A backdrop without uplighting or a pin spot photographs flat.
- Keep sponsor logos at a scale that reads in a phone photo from 3 m away.
- Add install and removal to the production schedule.

Why it matters
It is where every photo is taken; spend here before spending on table décor.
