Uplighting.

LED fixtures placed on the floor against walls and columns to wash them in colour.

How it works in practice.

Uplights are small LED fixtures set on the floor a short distance from a wall, column or drape, aimed upward.

Most rental units are battery-powered and wireless, which means no cords across the floor and a set-up that takes an hour rather than a day.

Worked numbers.

In our experience, one fixture every 2 to 3 m of usable wall gives an even wash.

Skip doors, windows and the wall behind the buffet.

How to handle it.

Pick one or two colours tied to the theme or brand. Rainbow cycling looks like a nightclub.

Check whether the venue allows outside lighting vendors or charges a fee for them.

More detail, examples and common mistakes are on this page, below the video.

How it works in practice

Uplights are small LED fixtures set on the floor a short distance from a wall, column or drape, aimed upward. Most rental units are battery-powered and wireless, which means no cords across the floor and a set-up that takes an hour rather than a day. Wired fixtures are brighter and can run all night, but need power along the walls and cable management.

The effect depends on the surface. Light-coloured walls and textured drape take colour well. Dark wood panelling and mirrored walls absorb or bounce it. Columns are the best value in a room: one fixture on each makes architecture out of a pillar you were trying to hide.

Worked numbers

In our experience, one fixture every 2–3 m of usable wall gives an even wash. Skip doors, windows and the wall behind the buffet.

Technician placing evenly spaced amber uplights along a banquet hall wall
Room Usable wall Fixtures Typical cost
Restaurant private room about 30 m 10–12 roughly $300–$700
Banquet hall, 200 guests about 60 m 20–24 $600–$1,200 for 20 (typical GTA range, 2026)
Hotel ballroom with columns about 80 m 28–32 roughly $850–$1,900

The middle row uses the typical GTA range; the other rows scale it and are estimates.

How to handle it

  1. Pick one or two colours tied to the theme or brand. Rainbow cycling looks like a nightclub.
  2. Check whether the venue allows outside lighting vendors or charges a fee for them.
  3. Ask whether the fixtures are battery or wired, and how long batteries last at full output.
  4. Ask if they can be DMX controlled, so the colour can change when the dance floor opens.
  5. Keep fixtures out of walkways; a 30 cm box at a doorway is a trip hazard in the dark.

Uplighting pairs well with a gobo on the floor and pin spots on centrepieces. Against sheer drape, it turns a plain hall into a colour field.

Why it matters

The highest-impact lighting dollar: it changes the entire room for $20–$40 a fixture.

Example

Twenty amber uplights around a banquet hall for a 1920s theme.

Common mistakes

  • Using uplighting without dimming the house lights
