Team Building.

Good team building has a skill people want to learn, a stake low enough that nobody is embarrassed, and a shared meal afterwards.

Bad team building has a trust fall.

Start here.

If you have a date and a headcount, open the planning timeline and the checklist.

If you have a budget and nothing else, the budget guide shows what a per-head number buys in Toronto, and the activities page lists the formats that work for different teams.

What team building is for.

Strip the jargon and there are three honest reasons to do it: people who work together have not met in person; people who have met do not talk across teams; or the team has had a hard quarter and needs a day that is not about the work.

Decide which one applies, because it changes the format.

Formats by team size.

Under 25: a workshop. Cooking classes, improv, a magic workshop, circus skills, a self-defence session, pottery, mixology.

25 to 100: a hosted competition or rotating stations: a team cook-off, a scavenger hunt across a neighbourhood, a circus-skills circuit, an escape-room block booking, a game-show format with a professional host. Mixed teams assigned in advance, not chosen on the day.

The GTA reality.

Venues: Toronto has more activity venues than almost any Canadian city: axe throwing, climbing, go-karts, simulators, board-game cafés, escape rooms, cooking studios, breweries and distilleries with event rooms, and private dining rooms in every neighbourhood. Outdoors, the parks and ravines are free to walk but a permit is needed to organize a group activity, and Toronto Parks special event permits for summer weekends need to be applied for months ahead.

Seasons: June and September are the busiest months for team building and the hardest to book; January and February are quiet and cheap, and an indoor workshop in the dead of winter lands well.

Inclusivity is a planning task, not a value.

A team-building day that half the team cannot fully join is a team-dividing day.

Ask on the invitation about dietary needs, mobility, sensory needs and whether anyone prefers to sit out physical elements, and build the day so that sitting out is a real option that nobody notices.

Who runs it.

For under 25 people, the venue or the workshop provider runs it and you host.

For 25 to 100, a professional host or facilitator is the difference between an activity and an event; a good host assigns teams, keeps the energy up, handles the people who did not want to come, and closes on time.

The full guide, with tables and checklists, continues below this video.

Formats by team size

  • Under 25: workshops (cooking, self-defence, improv, magic), escape rooms.
  • 25–100: hosted competitions, circus skills workshops, scavenger hunts across a neighbourhood.
  • 100+: field days, charity builds, festival-style stations.

Measure it

Ask two questions a week later: “Did you talk to someone you don’t usually?” and “Would you do it again?” Anything above 70% yes on both is a success.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best team building format for a small team in Toronto?

A hands-on workshop (cooking, improv, magic, circus skills, self-defence) for two to three hours followed by a shared meal; everyone learns the same new thing together.

Is team building a taxable benefit in Canada?

An employer-provided social event is non-taxable when it is open to all employees and costs $150 or less per person including taxes, up to six events a year; above $150 the whole amount is taxable.

How do you measure whether team building worked?

Ask two questions a week later: did you talk to someone you don't usually, and would you do it again; above 70% yes on both means the format is worth repeating.
