Circus and Carnival.
Red-and-white stripes, popcorn, a ringmaster MC and real circus acts.
Works for family days, product launches and summer company picnics.
Where this theme works (and where it doesn't).
Circus and carnival is the most inclusive theme on this list.
Kids, grandparents and a sales team can all enjoy it at the same time, which is why it shows up at company family days, summer picnics, product launches and community festivals.
Budget: what it costs at three levels.
For 100 guests, before HST and service charge.
Typical GTA ranges for 2026; outdoor events add tent, washroom and power lines that indoor ones do not.
Venue fit.
Floor acts need space more than height.
A Cyr wheel wants a 6 m clear circle on a hard, level floor; stilt walkers need about 3.5 m of clear height and no low doorways on their route.
Run of show for a themed night.
Write it into a run of show with one named owner per cue, and have the ringmaster introduce every act.
Making it not look cheap.
Choose vintage over cartoon. Cream, deep red and brass look like a real big top.
Let the food carts be the décor. A working popcorn machine and a candy-floss cart, lit warm, do more than banners.

Where this theme works (and where it doesn’t)
Circus and carnival is the most inclusive theme on this list. Kids, grandparents and a sales team can all enjoy it at the same time, which is why it shows up at company family days, summer picnics, product launches and community festivals. It gives you a built-in program: a ringmaster, acts, games and food that is fun to eat.
It struggles at formal dinners. A seated four-course gala in red-and-white stripes reads as a children’s party unless you lean hard into the vintage side (think Belle Époque cirque, deep reds, brass, candlelight). It also falls flat if the “circus” is only décor. Guests expect acts. Budget for at least two real performers or choose a different theme.
Use the party theme generator to test it against your guest list before you commit.
Budget: what it costs at three levels

| Line | Lean | Mid | Showpiece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food | Carnival stations in a hall, roughly $65–$80 per guest | Stations plus a bar, $80–$110 | Hotel or catered tent, $120+ |
| Roaming acts | One juggler or stilt walker for 2 hrs (ask for quotes) | Two roamers plus a balloon artist | Three or four roamers and a face painter |
| Stage show | None; games with a host | 20-minute circus show | Show plus an aerial duo, $1,500–$4,000 plus rigging |
| Outdoor extras | None (indoor) | 20×40 frame tent, $1,200–$2,500 | Tent, washroom trailer $1,500–$3,500/day, first-aid, security |
| Rough total | $9,000–$14,000 | $15,000–$25,000 | $30,000 and up |
Security runs about $35–$50 an hour per guard and registered first-aid responders about $45–$70 an hour; both are worth it at any public or family event of real size.
Venue fit
Floor acts need space more than height. A Cyr wheel wants a 6 m clear circle on a hard, level floor; stilt walkers need about 3.5 m of clear height and no low doorways on their route. Aerial acts are a different matter. Lyra and silks need a certified rigging point rated for the dynamic load (typically at least 1,000 lb / 450 kg working load, confirmed by an engineer), a ceiling of 4.5–5 m at minimum and 6 m or more preferred, venue approval and an insured rigger. No points? A free-standing rig can work outdoors or in a tall hall.
Tents over 60 m² in Ontario need a building permit, must sit at least 3 m from other structures and need flame-resistant fabric certification (CAN/ULC-S109); tents of 225 m² or more need an engineer’s review. Fire acts need venue approval, often fire department approval, a fire watch and extinguishers. LED versions need none of that, which is why we usually recommend them indoors.
A Toronto park event goes through the city’s Parks special event permit process; apply months ahead for summer weekends. Outdoor amplified sound may need a noise exemption permit, which takes about four weeks.
Run of show for a themed night
| Time | Cue | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| 16:00 | Gates open; stilt walkers and juggler roam; popcorn cart running | Planner |
| 16:30 | Games open with a host; balloon artist and face painter | Games host |
| 17:30 | Food stations open | Catering |
| 18:15 | Ringmaster welcome; 20-minute circus show | Ringmaster |
| 18:40 | Prize draw or awards (keep it short) | Host |
| 19:00 | Aerial finale, then DJ for families until close | Rigger, DJ |
Write it into a run of show with one named owner per cue, and have the ringmaster introduce every act.

Making it not look cheap
- Choose vintage over cartoon. Cream, deep red and brass look like a real big top. Primary-colour plastic looks like a dollar-store aisle.
- Let the food carts be the décor. A working popcorn machine and a candy-floss cart, lit warm, do more than banners.
- Use real fabric. Striped drape on a backdrop frame or a striped tent ceiling beats printed vinyl.
- Light the acts. A circus show in flat daylight or house fluorescents loses half its impact. Even two lighting trees on a stage change it.
- Give the ringmaster a script. A good ringmaster holds the whole evening together; a co-worker with a top hat does not.
Accessibility and inclusivity
Clowns frighten some children (and adults). Keep clown characters optional and away from the entrance. Warn about loud moments such as cannon sound effects or confetti blasts, and offer a quiet tent or room. Many children and adults with sensory sensitivities appreciate a published schedule so they can step out before the loud parts. Keep paths step-free and wide enough for wheelchairs and strollers, and put accessible washrooms on the plan, not as an afterthought. Label carnival food for allergens; nuts and gluten are everywhere in this menu.

Finding the acts
The entertainment finder filters circus acts by room height and floor space. Then browse the entertainment directory. Directory listings owned by the site founder carry a visible disclosure and receive no ranking preference.
Décor
- Palette: red, white, cream, with brass and navy accents
- Striped tent fabric or pipe-and-drape in red and white; marquee letters; vintage carnival signage
- Popcorn and candy-floss carts as décor that works
- String lights overhead; a ticket-booth entrance
Food & drink
- Carnival classics done well: gourmet corn dogs, loaded fries, popcorn flavours, candy floss
- A pretzel and dip station; a milkshake bar
- Bar: a 'strongman' punch, a cotton-candy cocktail, craft lemonade for kids
- Dessert: funnel cake bites, caramel apples
Entertainment
- A ringmaster MC runs the program
- Jugglers, stilt walkers and a unicyclist roaming from arrival
- A 20-minute circus show: acrobatics, hula hoop, juggling, a Cyr wheel if the floor allows
- Carnival games with a host; a balloon artist and face painter for kids
- Aerial act for the finale if the venue has rigging or height for a rig
