Kids' Birthdays.

The right party depends on the age more than the budget.

A first birthday is for the adults; a 7-year-old's is for the 7-year-olds; a 10-year-old wants fewer kids, more autonomy and no decorations in sight.

Start here.

If you have a date and a rough guest count, open the planning timeline and the budget guide.

If you have neither, start with the venue guide, because in the GTA the venue decides the date, the length, the headcount and whether you cook.

By age: what actually works.

Ninety minutes, midday, mostly adults.

The birthday child will nap through part of it.

Typical GTA costs.

These are typical ranges from GTA quotes, not rules, and they move with the season and the postal code.

Children's entertainers typically charge 250 to 600 dollars per hour-long visit, with a 45-minute magic or circus show from a working professional in the 300 to 500 dollars range.

Three things GTA parents get wrong.

Allergies are planned last. Ask on the invitation, not at the door.

Entertainers are booked on price alone. A children's entertainer is a stranger in a room with your kid and twenty others.

Timing that avoids meltdowns.

Two hours is the ceiling for anyone under nine.

Start after lunch or after nap (1 p.m. on a Sunday is the GTA sweet spot), put the entertainer in the middle, the cake at three-quarters, and the loot bags at the door so leaving is a reward rather than a loss.

What the site can do for you.

The Directory lists children's entertainers and party venues across the GTA; a few listings are owned by the site's founder, carry a visible disclosure and get no ranking preference.

The entertainment finder narrows acts by age and room.

The full guide, with tables and checklists, continues below this video.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a kids' birthday party be?

Ninety minutes for ages 1–4, two hours for ages 5–8, two to three hours for ages 9–12; two hours is the ceiling for anyone under nine.

What does a kids' birthday party cost in Toronto?

Typically $300–$900 for a two-hour venue package, $250–$600 for an entertainer, and from about $150 for a home party with a hired act; a median party for a 6-year-old with 18 kids is around $900 all-in.

How do I vet a children's entertainer?

Ask for a recent police record check, liability insurance and references from a school or venue, and keep a parent in the room at all times.

Do I need a permit for a birthday party in a Toronto park?

Group use above a certain size needs a park permit, and inflatables, tents and amplified sound usually need permission on top; apply months ahead for summer weekends and check the current rules and fee with the city.
