How mentalism differs from magic

A mentalist appears to read minds, predict choices and influence decisions, rather than make objects appear or vanish. The effect is more personal, because the material is the audience's own thoughts, names and memories. That makes mentalism well suited to adult audiences at corporate dinners, galas, conferences and private parties, where guests enjoy being puzzled and talking about it afterwards. It is usually less suited to young children, who tend to prefer visual magic. If you are unsure which suits your crowd, the article on magician versus mentalist compares the two.

Stage set or walk-around

A stage set gives the whole room one shared experience and works best with a seated audience who can see and hear clearly, such as after dinner or as a break in a conference program. Walk-around mind reading during a reception reaches guests in small groups and helps people mix, but not everyone will see it. Many hosts book both: walk-around during cocktails to build curiosity, then a stage set later that pays it off. Plan the stage set for a moment when the room is quiet, service has paused and the bar is not the loudest thing in the room.

Preparing the room and the audience

  • Seat the audience close to the front and avoid long, narrow rooms where the back rows lose contact.
  • Provide enough light on the audience as well as the performer; volunteers need to be seen.
  • Agree in advance whether senior guests or the guest of honour should be involved.
  • Tell the performer about any topics to avoid, such as personal matters, health or recent company news.
  • Confirm the microphone type and that it has been tested before the set begins.

Booking and timing

Book as early as your date allows, particularly for December and for spring wedding Saturdays. Share the guest count, the program timing and the room layout when you request a quote, and forward any technical needs to the venue as soon as they arrive. The entertainment finder helps confirm whether mentalism fits your event, and the Academy lesson on working with performers explains how to look after an act on the day.
