Choosing a family magician

A good family show works on two levels at once: the children get bright, visual magic and plenty of chances to help, while the adults catch the jokes aimed over the children's heads. When you compare performers, ask how the show changes by age. A room of four-year-olds needs short routines, simple participation and no frightening moments; eight- to ten-year-olds want to be fooled and will try hard to catch the method. Mixed-age groups at holiday parties and community events need a performer who can hold the attention of toddlers and grandparents in the same half hour.

Setting up the room

The best performance space for children is a clear area at the front with the audience seated on the floor or low chairs in a semicircle, close enough to see small props. Keep the area free of toys, pets and gift piles, and keep windows or bright lights behind the audience rather than behind the performer. For a school gym or community hall, a microphone matters more than it seems; children's voices and chair noise carry. Ask whether the performer brings a sound system or needs one from the venue, and confirm where they can park and unload.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How long is the show, and is there an option for balloon twisting or a meet-and-greet afterwards?
  • How does the performer choose volunteers, and how do they handle a shy or upset child?
  • Are there any live animals, confetti, fire or small parts you should know about?
  • Does the performer carry liability insurance, and can they send a certificate if the venue asks?
  • For school or community bookings, can they provide a current police check if one is required?

Timing the show

At a birthday party, the show usually works best after guests have arrived and played for a while but before food and cake, when attention is still high. Allow fifteen minutes before the start time for set-up in the room. At family holiday parties, schedule it before dinner or early in the evening, while the youngest guests are still awake. The kids' birthday entertainment guide covers other options by age, and the cost guide for kids' entertainers explains typical price ranges across the GTA.
