Sangeet.
A pre-wedding celebration in South Asian weddings with music, dance performances and dinner.
How it works in practice.
A sangeet is often closer to a gala than a party.
Expect a stage, a dance floor, a DJ, live dhol, an MC, sometimes a band, and a program of rehearsed family dance performances.
How to handle it.
Get the list of performances early: who, how many dancers, song file, length, and any props.
Collect every music file at least a week out, labelled with the group name and running order, and give the DJ a single playlist.
In Ontario and the GTA.
Brampton, Mississauga and Markham have many banquet halls set up for South Asian events, often with in-house catering, staging and lighting.
If the hall is not licensed and the family wants a bar, an AGCO Special Occasion Permit is needed; a private-event SOP must be applied for at least 10 days ahead, and every server must be Smart Serve certified.
More detail, examples and common mistakes are on this page, below the video.
How it works in practice
A sangeet is often closer to a gala than a party. Expect a stage, a dance floor, a DJ, live dhol, an MC, sometimes a band, and a program of rehearsed family dance performances. Guest counts are frequently similar to the wedding itself. Dinner is often served late, after the performances, and the dance floor can run until the venue curfew.
Treat it as its own event with its own run of show, its own vendors and its own budget line. Running it the night before the wedding means the same family and vendor teams turn around in under 24 hours, so build rest and strike time into both days.
How to handle it

- Get the list of performances early: who, how many dancers, song file, length, and any props.
- Collect every music file at least a week out, labelled with the group name and running order, and give the DJ a single playlist.
- Set a maximum length per performance. Family numbers can creep; four to five minutes each keeps the program moving.
- Book a rehearsal on the stage if the venue allows it, even for 30 minutes.
- Plan the food timing with the caterer so hot dishes are not held through a long program.
- Assign one person backstage to line up each group two performances ahead.
In Ontario and the GTA
Brampton, Mississauga and Markham have many banquet halls set up for South Asian events, often with in-house catering, staging and lighting. If the hall is not licensed and the family wants a bar, an AGCO Special Occasion Permit is needed; a private-event SOP must be applied for at least 10 days ahead, and every server must be Smart Serve certified. A DJ in the GTA runs a typical range, 2026, of $900 to $2,500. Check the hall curfew and any noise limits, which are usually stricter after 11 p.m.
Questions to ask

- Does the hall supply the stage, and at what height?
- Are dhol players allowed indoors, and is there a volume limit?
- What time must music stop, and what does overtime cost?
- Can décor from the sangeet be reused at the mehndi or wedding?
Why it matters
Often a full event of its own, with a stage, DJ, dhol and 200+ guests, the night before the wedding.
Example
A sangeet for 300 in a Brampton banquet hall with family dance performances.
Common mistakes
- Treating the sangeet as a small dinner in the budget
